Unfortunately, it’s me again with more bad news.
This is one that impacts on virtually everyone who has ever been associated with Rodillians.
Barry Marley who has been a constant in the club ever since it's formation in 1960 has after a short illness passed away on 29th July aged 90. Barry was one of the individuals that truly epitomises everything that the club stands for.
Virtually all of you will have known Barry, but what is clear is that he played an absolutely massive part in the success of the club throughout it's existence.
What can I say. Founder member, 1st team captain (3 times), Chairman (6 years), President (6 years), Ground committee chairman (almost forever), principal touch judge (even longer) and other roles in between.
Barry was one of those people that was always there. He never stopped supporting the club and the team in whatever capacity he could. It is only in his latter years that he found it more difficult to attend every game. Lots of you reading this email will remember him always being there, home and away, week after week, year after year.
I remember confronting Barry at an AGM when he advised that he was stepping down as ground committee chairman to which he replied "I am 80 Ian". Not a good enough excuse in my opinion. But seriously, he wasn't stepping down from the ground committee just stepping down from the chairman's role. He genuinely couldn't do enough for the club.
Our club represented a major part of Barry's life for decades and what his contribution to the club has had is probably immeasurable.
Our sincere condolences go out to Barry's family and friends.
Barry's funeral was held on Tuesday 22 August 2023
