Stanley Rodillians RUFC 22 – 15 Hessle RUFC
Stanley Rodillians entertained Hessle in a Yorkshire 4 league match At Manley Park ,Stanley.
The game played in blustery November conditions was to coin a phrase a game of two halves.
The game kicked off with Rods playing up hill and facing the wind. Immediately Hessle were on the front foot using the strong wind to dominate territory, only superb defence and a strong set piece work held them out. It took 25 minutes for the first points to be scored. Ill-discipline from Rods forwards giving Hessle the chance to kick a penalty goal, they grabbed the opportunity and took a 0 -3 lead.
From the re start Rods were to make their only visit of the first half in to the opposition territory, But an important visit it was. Strong work by the forwards gave the backs a platform and neat handling put fullback Adam Scrafton diving into the far corner, he was unsuccessful with the conversion and rods had the lead - Rods 5 – 3 Hessle
Hessle then grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck scoring two tries. The first try a clear obstruction that went unseen by the officials. The second came from consistent pressure with Hessle's forwards battering the line before crossing. One try was converted and Hessle had the half time lead 5 – 15.
In the first half Rods had put in a strong defensive shift, but with the wind at their backs the second half was to be a different story. Rods soon had Hessle pinned in their own half and the pressure soon told as Liam Crawley found his way over the try line and the added conversion by Adam Scrafton brought Rods back into it with the score at 12 -15.
The game was soon to draw level as Adam Scrafton recovered from a high tackle to slot the awarded penalty from 40m's to bring the score to 15 all.
Hessle were resolute in defence and had their attacking moment’s .With 10 minutes remaining Rods defended some furious attacks on their line eventually gaining a penalty to clear their lines. From the resulting lineout Schofield kicked through only to be barged out of the way, but No8 Nathan Booth was close in support, and was able to touch down, Rods had the lead and another Scrafton conversion gave Rods the victory and a final score of 22-15.
